LA Watts Summer Games – History

The inaugural L.A. Watts Summer Games were held in 1968 at Locke High School. Originally called the Watts Summer Olympics, the Games were modeled after the Olympic Games by Bill Sims and fellow members of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce.

The Games were to signify a rebirth of civic spirit in the troubled South Los Angeles community of Watts.

50th Year Anniversary

Celebrating The USA City Games year-round program!


LA Watts Summer Games 50th Anniversary, a USA City Games Program (USACG) continue the success with an LA-based sports competition organized by strategic partner, Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, June 16th. (See events for details)
The legendary Los Angeles Laker Champion, philanthropic youth advocate and business entrepreneur, AC Green, along with 4x Olympian and USACG’s VP of Youth Development, Rod Dixon will welcome the athletes and join LA Recreation Parks as they become part of the Games historical success in continuing to bring together the inner city and metropolitan youth through health, education & sports.
“Many Angelenos will benefit from their involvement and build a foundation from our program, inspire and motivate our kids giving them an opportunity to participate in the LA 2028 Olympics”, Rod Dixon says
There have been over 300,000 Alumni from the Los Angeles Unified School District who have participated in the Watts Summer Games in the past. John Elway, Lisa Leslie, Byron Scott, Flo-Jo, are just a few of the many athletes that have achieved success from their past participation.
The USA City Games are honored to bring in first time sponsor, Champion as they have provided all the program shirts and returning partner, Southern California Metropolitan Water Company, for providing the Gold and Silver medals to our athletes.
LA City Recreation and Parks along with the USACG Program has arranged for a Basketball and Volleyball competition with girls and boys 11-15 to kick off this summers year-long program.
